About City Centre of Almelo

An urban location with a contemporary character and a cosy, intimate centre that speaks to the potential and dynamic in the region.

Urban Interest has been involved in Almelo city centre for more than 15 years, helping to achieve that goal. In recent years we have worked intensively with the municipality and the Beter Wonen housing association.

This collaboration has helped Almelo exchange its former ‘oversized coat’ for an individual style that’s just the right size. The new port, constructed by the municipality, has restored a measure of culture and recognition to the city, whose textiles were once world-famous. The port and the existing waterside boulevard are connected to the central square, which has been renovated by Urban Interest. Large retail premises such as the former V&D department store and the snooker and pool centre have been converted into two attractive residential complexes, aptly named Het Warenhuis (‘the department store’) and Het Pakhuis (‘the warehouse’). Urban Interest has also created more than 4,000 square metres of retail space and 42 new-build apartments situated above the shops. This achievement is connected with the expanded rooftop car park, the central square and the renovated Galerij shopping arcade. Thanks to all these conversions and renovation work the city now has a vibrant new centre with an amazing atmosphere and dynamism.
